Griffis "Griff"
Smith |
J. Griffis
"Griff" Smith is one of the most dedicated staff photographer's with the Texas
Dept. of Transportation. His dedication to his craft was demonstrated in 1986 while
shooting at La Kiva Restaurant in Terlingua. A shot he wanted required climbing on the
roof, and in the process he did not "break-a-leg" but did break an arm.
Griff drove himself to Alpine to get the arm splintered, only to return to
Terlingua and complete two more days of shooting, before returning to Austin to receive
proper medical care.
The native of Caldwell, is a graduate of the Art Institute of Atlanta, and
worked at Texas A&M University before arriving to Texas Dept. of Transportation's
Texas Highways magazine. We hope you enjoy these samples of Griff's creativity. |

Neon
Flag Institute of
Texan Cultures, San Antonio
"I was working on a project for the Institute, and one of the photos the
project director wanted was of the neon flag. I suggested posing a pioneer family in front
of it. The institute used the family shot on a T-shirt, but I liked the single cowboy
better." |
Adobe Wall
Gage Hotel, Marathon
"I kept watching this wall & photographed it several times as the sunlight
altered it.
I like the storm clouds moving during the one-minute exposure." |

Woman
Shopping New Braunfels
Outlet Mall, New Braunfels
"I was doing a project for the mall. I didn't see anyone who looked like a
serious shopper. I pulled this saleswoman from a cosmetics store, and she became a
power-shopper for the photo." |
Watermelon Rind Pie Studio
"Sometimes I feel the need to
experience what I'm photographing. This watermelon rind pie was just about the sweetest
pie I ever ate." |

Johnson family home, Manor
"I was working on a black-and-white documentary on Manor. I think the kids were more
interested in my 4x5 view camera than anything else."
