Overview

The EOS 5D Mark II features a huge, full-frame sensor. A 21.1-megapixel CMOS sensor delivers images of up to 5616 x 3744 pixels. And since it is full-frame, all lenses will deliver the angle of view they would on a 35mm camera without a conversion factor. Thanks to improved noise reduction technologies, images shot even at highest sensitivity will be remarkably smooth.

The EOS 5D Mark II is the first digital EOS to offer recording of Full HD video in Live View Mode. Capable of shooting clips almost half an hour long at full 1080 resolution, the EOS 5D Mark II does amazing double duty, making it possible to shoot broadcast quality video on your camera by simply changing settings.

The advantages move way beyond the ability to shoot on your SLR - the wealth of high-speed lenses and shooting accessories that make EOS photography so remarkable can be used in shooting video. Where interchangeable lens video cameras cost thousands of dollars, with the EOS 5D Mark II their operation, including HDMI output, is simply an added bonus to a remarkable camera.

The EOS 5D Mark II has a sophisticated AF system consisting of 9 user-selectable AF points, along with a total of 6 additional vertical and horizontal AF assist points. With Live View Function on the EOS 5D Mark II, you can zoom in and navigate the composition 5x or 10x normal size.

The EOS 5D Mark II has an all-new 3.0-inch Clear View LCD that features high-resolution 920,000 dots/VGA for far more detail than any previous EOS Digital LCD. The EOS 5D Mark II is compatible with all Canon lenses in the EF lineup, ranging from ultra-wide angle to super telephoto lenses.

Review:
Here's the Canon EOS 5D audio sync issue or problem.

Last Wednesday I used my two 5D MkII's in a 3 camera music video shoot. The third camera was a Sony PMW-EX1. Audio was recorded on two additional devices. One audio recording device was an Edirol R4 Pro. The other audio recording setup was a Tascam USB Interface to a MacBook Pro.

The Sony Camera, Edirol, and Tascam/MacBook Pro devices all synced sound perfectly over the full duration of the shoot (just over 20 minutes). To clarify - once the different sources are sync'd quickly and easily to the slate clap on the waveform at the beginning of the shoot they all stayed perfectly in sync for the rest of the video.

Both Canon cameras audio and video sync'd perfectly to each other but drifted significantly from the other 3 devices even over a 3 minute segment. That is a very serious problem for me and one that introduces significant post-production trouble and expense.

This issue was so unexpected (I haven't run into this in years of working with a range of equipment) that I performed 3 subsequent tests to confirm that the 5D MkII's run too fast. The results from the tests show both of my 5D Mark II's run about 14 frames too fast in 10 minutes. Audio that is 1 full frame out of sync is noticeable on sharp sounds causing an echo. Audio that is 2 or 3 frames out of sync causes echo on any sound and looks odd in terms of lip sync.

That the two Canon cameras audio sync'd OK to each other tells me that the cameras can be calibrated to a standard. Evidently they are just calibrated to an incorrect standard.

Anybody else experience this? Does anybody really know if this is likely a chip issue or a firmware issue? Does anyone know an easy, reliable way to get the clips to conform to the standard without time-consuming constant tweaking?

I contacted Canon tech support and the girl there wasn't too concerned. She said: There is no fix and that the 5d isn't really a video camera so what did I expect? Nice!

Problems I've encountered:
Only this audio issue

Review:
The full frame sensor on this means more than just getting the most out of the lenses you may already own. That's what made me want a full frame sensor- I wanted to be able to get the same images I'd been used to with my 20mm, 28-105mm, and 70-300mm on an A2E.
What I hadn't expected to make such a huge difference is the sensitivity that the full frame sensor has over the APS-C cameras. You wouldn't believe the clarity and sharpness you can get in the lowest light situations. You're able to get clear shots with no flash indoors with low lighting and thus you can get nice, warm candid shots without harsh flashing and shadows. The camera is relatively easy to use considering all the things it's capable of. The LCD display is simply gorgeous and true to color. I use it with the battery grip as well, this is nice not only because it allows you to run two batteries but because it provides an extra bit of support when holding it for horizontal shots and the extra controls and handle for vertical shots.
