Portraits in the age of digital.

Join professional photographer and photography book author, Kirk Tuck, for a full day workshop on creating and shooting beautiful portraits.  Tuck will show lighting techniques with traditional studio electronic flash units, portable battery flashes and a range of other lighting options such as florescent and tungsten.  Most of the workshop will be indoors but (weather permitting) there will be a short outdoor session to show how to cope with ambient and environmental light.  We will also have one of Kirk's favorite professional make-up artists for one hour to give an overview about make-up and how to work with a pro MUA.  There will be three models at the shoot.  The morning will be fast paced with emphasis on learning the fundamentals shown in the demonstrations.  These include:  Learning to light.  Learning to meter.  Learning to pose your subject.  Learning to develop rapport with your subject.  Getting the best from your background.  Lighting to minimize post processing.  And,  Shooting workflow.

We'll break for a self paced lunch (lunch on your own).  We'll be near the intersection of S. Lamar Blvd. and Barton Springs Rd.  The workshop will take place in the Wisenhut studio at Zachary Scott Theater at 1510 Toomey road.  The area is surrounded by restaurants, including Shlotzsky's, P. Terry's, Casa De Luz, Austin Java, Flip Happy Crepes, Chuy's and many more.

After lunch we'll have a demonstration of a different style of portraiture by a nationally known, award-winning advertising photographer.  We'll have our demonstration and discussion by our make up artist and then we'll set up four shooting areas and take turns with hands on shooting.  We'll use our models and have our workshop participants sit for each other as they use a range of tools and set ups provided by Kirk Tuck and Precision Camera.  We'll wrap up with 1/2 hour of Q&A.  We'll need to be out of the space by 5pm.

We'll adjourn to the closest coffee house to continue with a social coffee hour, Q&A.

In addition to the workshop you'll receive a signed copy of one of Kirk's three published books or sign up for a prepaid copy of his fourth book.  It's about lighting tools and how to use them.  Additionally, we'll have door prizes from Precision Camera as well as a "white paper" on portrait photography by Kirk Tuck.

The class is $225 and limited to 30 people.  We will have coffee, water and donuts in the morning,  coffee, soft drinks and snacks in the afternoon.  Lunch is on your own.

When you leave this workshop you'll have the basic know how to do great portraits.  The class is appropriate for people for whom photography is a passion.  You'll need to know the basics of photography:  How to set your cameras shutter speeds and apertures.  How to work in manual exposure.  The very basics of lighting.  We'll supply the rest.  Bring your camera and be ready to learn.
