Caprock Canyon Campout
with Andrew Fritz

Hidden in the heart of North Texas, Caprock Canyon is a hidden gem of our state park system. It lies across the transition from the panhandle plains to the Llano Estacado. As the land falls away, dramatic red sandstone cliffs are formed under a harder sandstone caprock.

Thanks to its remote location, Caprock Canyon is one of the best undiscovered places for night sky photography. The air quality is generally excellent and light pollution is minimal. During the day, numerous hikes into the canyons and on to the top of the ridges offer great views and numerous photographic opportunities. Wildlife is plentiful including prairie dogs, porcupines, birds of prey, road runners, deer, coyotes, bobcats and other native creatures as well as the Texas state bison herd. The region also exhibits dramatic spring skies with occasional thunderstorms.

The Workshop

This is a laid back workshop. We will hike and make photos, and Andrew will be available to answer questions or to provide 1:1 help. Andrew will lead group hikes each day and lead a night photography session each night. Some of the hikes will be easy and other strenuous.

Attendees will have the opportunity to photography bison and prairie dogs at their leisure. There are ample landscape photo opportunities for those who wish to take advantage of them.

There will be a group campfire each evening (burn ban allowing) for everyone to enjoy while sharing their photos and stories from the day (and night).

We will send a detailed itinerary to registrants as the event approaches.

Pre-Workshop Facebook Live

Andrew will conduct a pre-workshop facebook live two weeks prior to the workshop to help everyone prep for the trip. He will answer questions and discuss what to expect. Participants will receive an invite via email with instructions.

Camping

We have reserved a block of campsites and your campsite is included in your registration cost. Once you sign up for the class, we will contact you to determine if you need a your own site or are sharing it with another attendee.

Check in for the campgrounds is at 2 p.m. Group activities will not begin until dinner time on Friday, May 3.

Students are responsible for their own admission to the state park. Admission is $4/person/day ($12 total for the three days of the campout) or free with a current valid state park pass. Cash is required if you arrive after the office closes at 5 p.m.

All sites are suitable for RVs up to 40-feet long with 30 amp hookups and water. Pets ARE allowed in the campground as well if you want to bring your favorite 4 legged photo friends! If you have specific RV site needs, please email Andrew (Andrew@AzulOx.com) to verify what you need. He can set aside a specific site for you on a first-come-first-serve basis.

Getting There and Around

Participants are responsible for their own transportation to, from and around the park. Caprock is not a huge park, but we will be driving to trailheads. Participants are welcome to carpool for convenience.

Caprock Canyon is located near Quitaque, Texas. It is approximately a 6.5 hours drive from Austin. Limited groceries, “restaurants” and gas are available just outside the park in Quitaque and Turkey. Be aware that the park and Quitaque are in a very rural/farming area without fast food or other 24-hour retailers we take for granted near Austin.

About the Instructor

Andrew is a self taught photographer who comes from a software engineering background. On his very first trip with a camera he discovered night photography, and like many photographers he has always been drawn to the beauty of the outdoors. He developed his landscape and night photography skills through trial and error in various environments from the sprawling stark beauty of west Texas to bright urban settings around Washington DC and Austin. When not making landscape, nature and night time images, Andrew is shooting for AzulOx Visuals making a variety of images from weddings, to architecture and everything in between. Andrew loves solving problems but more than that, he loves sharing his knowledge with others, helping them grow.

Class & Event Cancellations

Mock Wedding, Flash Fest, Special Events and One-Time Classes
You have up until seven days before a scheduled Mock Wedding, Flash Fest, Photo Campouts under $200 (including Caprock Canyon, Spring and Fall Photo Camping Extravaganza), special events and one-time classes to cancel and receive a full refund or to reschedule. If you do not show up for a class that we are only holding one time or a class that we hold rarely, your class registration will be forfeited and you will not be permitted a refund or to reschedule. We will not offer a reschedule attempt to individuals who don't show up to the Mock Wedding Workshop or Flash Fest due to the high amount of resources required for that class.

How to Reschedule or Cancel a Class
Please contact the store at 512-467-7676 or email classes@precision-camera.com to cancel a class. Class cancellations or requests to be rescheduled that are sent through other channels, such as Facebook or Meetup.com messages, will not be honored. Please note that class refunds are only issued during business hours, Monday through Friday.

Minimum Enrollment
Each class needs a minimum number of students to enroll before the class can “make.” If the minimum enrollment has not been met two business days before the class begins, the class will be cancelled. All students who enrolled in the class will be notified by telephone or email, and may transfer to a different class or be issued a refund (see refund procedure). We encourage all students to enroll as soon as registration begins. Please check your phone and email messages, including your SPAM.
