Managing Photos for Serious Photographers

This class is about making your workflow work for you, instead of the other way around!

Sooner or later it happens to every photographer. However you managed your photos — things start to fall apart. You find yourself dreading your next editing or blogging session. Finding old work is difficult or impossible, you aren’t sure if everything is backed up, and adding new work is a serious drag. You feel trapped by decisions you made before you really knew what you were doing. In short, you need help breaking free from a bad workflow and establishing a new one.

This class will dive deep into managing archives of photos: ingesting photos, backing up photos, delivering photos, and finding photos.

This is a strategic class. We will discuss tactics and strategies for making your life as a photographer easier. We will touch on software (Lightroom, Capture One, others) but this is not a “click here” class. Rather, it is designed to help serious photographers tame their workflow so they can enjoy photography again.

Concepts Covered

• Managing Catalogs - Monolithic, Semi-monolithic and Project Based
• Ingestion and Delivery of Photos to Clients and Friends
• Master Archives and Finding Old Work
• Backup Strategies
• Breaking Vendor Lock-In

Audience

This is an all levels class. While it is aimed at serious photographers (professional or amateur) who find themselves fighting their workflow, it is also an excellent class for new photographers to take. It will give you the foundation to establish a great workflow from day one instead of needing to fix it later.

Schedule and Format

This is a three-hour, classroom-only class held at Precision Camera.

A laptop is optional, but having it along will allow the instructor to “look over your shoulder” and answer concrete questions about your own archive.

About the Instructor

Andrew Fritz is a self taught photographer who comes from a software engineering background. On his very first trip with a camera he discovered night photography and has never looked back.  He developed his night photography skills through trial and error in environments from the near perfect darkness of west Texas to bright urban settings around Washington DC and Austin. When not making night time images, Andrew is shooting for AzulOx Visuals making a variety of images from weddings, to architecture and everything in between. Andrew loves solving problems but more than that, he loves sharing his knowledge with others, helping them grow.
