Shoot with Joe McNally: Quality, Color & Direction
These are the big three of light. In this three-hour, hands-on session, Joe will explore the ability of the location photographer, through the use of both big and small flash, to create shadow, graphic power and drama. He will show how the face is in fact a landscape, and how different faces require different lighting solutions. Good portrait light is always the goal, how to get there can vary widely, depending on the subject, the location and the intent of the photo.
Participants will shoot, models will be provided, and the session will surely be lively as Joe demonstrates light, interacts with his subjects and offers advice on technique and approach as people shoot their own pictures. Joe and his lights are well-traveled and he is noted for being completely candid and open with information on the life, times and techniques of being a photographer.
Saturday Lecture & Demo: The Light & The Life
This presentation will be a lively mix of pictures, technique and laughter. Light is language, for a photographer, and Joe will show he has used light in many ways, shapes and forms during his career as a shooter for magazines like National Geographic, LIFE, and Sports Illustrated as well as many commercial clients.
McNally will show examples of light and light theory, and discuss survival strategies derived from 35 years on the road, on assignment, camera in hand. He will segue into a live lighting demonstration using a model on stage, and perhaps pulling subjects out of the audience, which always proves to be highly interactive and fun. This will be a highly caffeinated, fast paced event during which pictures will be made, stories will be shared, with knowledge and inspiration gained.
