Sports Portraiture

with Robert Seale, Canon, and Profoto

During this workshop, Robert will give a comprehensive slide presentation showing examples from his career shooting sports portraiture for many of his commercial and editorial clients.  Seale is known for his problem solving, photographic lighting skills, and getting multiple setups while working fast under pressure for clients like Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, SLAM and a host of other magazines.  He will show a variety of lighting setups with diagrams, from the very basic, to more elaborate productions and will happily answer student questions.

During the second half of the program (weather permitting), he will demonstrate some of these lighting setups on location with live models, showing the students what it takes to create dynamic sports portraiture in a live situation.  Participants will be able to gain valuable first-hand experience by assisting Robert in setting the scene to make the perfect portrait. They will also have the opportunity to get their hands on some of the latest Profoto lighting gear and Canon camera gear.

About the Instructor

Robert Seale is a Houston commercial photographer specializing in dynamic editorial, corporate, and advertising portraiture.

After majoring in both journalism and art at Stephen F. Austin State University, Seale began his photography career as a photojournalist, where he worked as a staffer at several major newspapers. He eventually became one of three staffers at the Sporting News, a national sports magazine where he spent 11 years shooting Super Bowls and World Series games as well as cover portraits. He later worked for 9 years as a contract photographer for Sports Illustrated, where he produced mostly portraits and feature stories for the magazine.

His love of portrait work led him to a Houston-based career specializing in shooting people for magazines, design firms, corporations, and advertising agencies.

Seale is known for his lighting skills and his ability to coax multiple creative concepts from a single location with limited time. He’s equally adept photographing celebrity athletes, busy CEO’s, and normal folks in any environment with any level of production necessary to tell their story.

As a speaker in the industry, Seale has taught photographic lighting, portraiture, and photography business practices  at photography workshops including the prestigious Eddie Adams Workshop, Photoshelter Luminance Conference, Rich Clarkson’s Photography at the Summit Sports Workshops, and the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar.

He has won awards from The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, was a finalist for Life Magazine’s Eissie Award (Sports-1998), and was featured in the Best of ASMP (2008, 2015).

A lifelong fascination with military pilots and aviation turned into an ongoing personal project chronicling aviation heroes and astronauts. This work is a labor of love, but has been widely published in aviation magazines. He is a member of ASMP (American Society of Media Photographers), and APA (American Photographic Artists).

His editorial credits include Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, Men’s Health, SLAM, Businessweek, Guideposts, Forbes, Fortune, Barron’s, GOLF Magazine, Smithsonian, Air & Space, The New York Times Magazine, and over 200 covers of The Sporting News.

As an annual report and advertising photographer, Robert has worked on projects for ExxonMobil, Chevron, Phillips 66, Schlumberger, Aramco Americas, Atlas Air, Baker Hughes GE, BP, EOG Resources, XTO, GMC, BMW, Invesco, Huntsman, Marathon, Major League Baseball, NBA, Pepsi, Gatorade, Reebok, Methodist Hospital, UT Health, Memorial Hermann, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Under Armour, and the Houston Texans.
