Learn the essentials and the tips & tricks for setting up a thriving newborn photography business. This two day program starts with a four hour program on what you need to know to set up the business side of a newborn photography business. The second day covers the photography and workflow systems needed for the studio side of the business.

The first class will answer the following questions. What hardware and software do I need? What support structures do I need to put in place? Where can I go to get my questions answered when I run into a problem? What organizations will be most helpful for my business’ success in the short-term, and in the long-run? How do I protect myself and my business from unforeseen issues and emergencies?

This class is perfect for photographers that have decided, or are deciding, to start a newborn photography business. If you have an existing business, and are looking to add newborn photography to your current model, this class will cover the essentials, and many tips and tricks that will save you time and money.

Schedule & Format

This is a two day - 4 hours each day - hands on class. The first day will cover business and the second day will cover the actual newborn photography workflow and systems.

On our business day, we will cover the essential legal, accounting, workflow, systems and logistics of running a newborn photography business. We will cover the essentials of business setup for starting your business. We will spend time aligning your personal and business values and goals to ensure long-term success in your business. While we won’t be shooting on this day, it will still be hands on, as we create a mini business plan to start you on your way to profit and success. Then we will cover a time management system to help you avoid the overwhelm that is inherent in running a newborn photography business.

On the second day of the program, we will dive right into the newborn photography side. On this day, we will photograph a family and newborn session with live models. We will set up the lighting, the background, and the posing. We will cover many of the popular family and newborn posing techniques, and how to transition between them. We will cover preparing your clients for the session, baby soothing techniques, tips and tricks for creating variety in your images, and the differences between using the newborn posing puck and photographing newborns on the floor, using bowls and buckets. We will also review the process for culling, editing and creating consistency in your images, and how to present them to your clients in a sales session for profitability and client satisfaction.

About the Instructor

Katie Amber CPP (Certified Professional Photographer) is an Austin based photographer, specializing in newborn, maternity & family portraits, and in onsite delivery of event photography. Her business, Get The Picture, has been operating profitably in Austin for over 18 years, and Katie Amber Photography, Katie’s portrait business, has been in operation in Austin since 2012.

Katie Amber has earned Austin Photographer of the Year for 2014 & 2016, and she is an award-winning photographer, having had many of her client’s images chosen for display in Imaging USA’s prestigious General & Loan Collections.

Katie LOVES newborn photography, but she also loves the aspects of running a business. In today’s competitive market, photographers must be good at both to succeed. And… she is committed to helping you do that.

Class Cancellations

Standard Classes
You can cancel a class registration up to two business days before the class begins and receive a full refund except for with some special classes and events such as the Mock Wedding and excursions. See below for more information.

If you register for a class that we hold on a regular basis, and do not show up for the class, you will be rescheduled one time. Once rescheduled once, if you do not show up for a class, your payment will be forfeited.

Minimum Enrollment
Each class needs a minimum number of students to enroll before the class can “make.” If the minimum enrollment has not been met two business days before the class begins, the class will be cancelled. All students who enrolled in the class will be notified by telephone or email, and may transfer to a different class or be issued a refund (see refund procedure). We encourage all students to enroll as soon as registration begins. Please check your phone and email messages, including your SPAM.

Unless otherwise stated, class refunds are only issued to customers that provide notice to the store that they would like a refund no later than two business days prior to the class. Refunds will not be issued to customers who sign up for a class but fail to attend.

How to Reschedule or Cancel a Class
Please contact the store at 512-467-7676 or email to cancel a class. Class cancellations or requests to be rescheduled that are sent through other channels, such as Facebook or messages, will not be honored. Please note that class refunds are only issued during business hours, Monday through Friday.
