Used Nikon 43-86mm f/3.5 AI Lens
The Zoom-Nikkor 43-86mm f/3.5 AI is one of the earliest zoom lenses produced by Nippon Kogaku for the Nikon F mount, and the AI-converted version represents the final production iteration of a lens that first appeared in 1963. Originally introduced as one of the most compact and affordable standard zoom lenses available for any system at the time, it earned a wide following through the 1960s and 1970s before being discontinued around 1981. The AI version incorporates Nikon's Automatic Indexing coupling ridge for compatibility with AI and later F-mount bodies, and features multicoating applied to reduce the flare and ghosting that affected earlier non-coated versions of the same optical design.
The 11-element, 8-group optical construction covers a 43-86mm range in a push-pull zoom barrel that allows simultaneous zoom and focus adjustment. At 450g and 82mm in diameter with a 52mm filter thread, it remains a compact package by the standards of its coverage range. The 7-bladed aperture stops down to f/22. The rotating front element during focus complicates polarizer use but does not affect standard filter work. This lens is a piece of Nikon optical history and is compatible via adapter with most modern mirrorless systems. This is a used example in the Precision Camera inventory.
