West Texas Photography Workshop

Posted by Vicki LeBlanc on 3rd Mar 2014

The historic Kokernot o6 Ranch, founded in 1912, is one of the largest ranches in Texas. Come April, that means two things: Branding time and the West Texas Photography Workshop! Previous attendees have won awards for photos taken during the spring roundup. Organizer Vicky LeBlanc explains what to expect at this year's event.

Day one will begin around 5:15AM where we depart from the hotel. It takes about 30-45 minutes to reach the 1st camp within the o6 Ranch. The first stop is where we will have breakfast, which is prepared by the ranch cooks from a chuck wagon and open fire. Some of the best pancakes, eggs, bacon and coffee you will every have! During breakfast, photographers will have the opportunity to photograph the camp. When we arrive it will be before sunrise and the moon will still be bright in the sky which makes for nice photos. A tripod will be useful.

After we finish breakfast the cowboys gather to the "catch pens" to select their horses for the days work. Here is where you will see a couple of the lead cowboys rope each horse for all of the cowboys. After they saddle up the cowboys will ride off to gather the cattle throughout the ranch. The terrain consists of mountains and canyons and we will travel by trucks and ride ahead to photograph them driving cattle by horseback through the canyons and into the working pens. Some of the working pens are at an elevation of over 5,000 feet. Photo opportunities can be had in every direction you look.

This year's guest professional and instructor is Randy Kerr. A Nikon representative will be present with loaner gear to use. Add on workshops are also available Friday and Sunday night to grant private access to a select few.

There are no greater opportunities for real West Texas photography than the Kokernot o6 Ranch. Photographers will leave the ranch with fabulous photographs and lasting memories. You will make new and lasting friendships and experience the age-old life of the cowboys and cowgirls in an awesome part of Texas!
