It's time for something new at Precision Camera University! With the help of Sigma, we were able to get pro photographer David FitzSimmons into our store to teach us all bout Curious Critters! A simple glance at his amazing work will have you wondering "how did he do that?"!
David will be hosting 2 events: A Thursday night seminar for $10, and a 6-hour hands-on workshop on Friday for $49. If you register for the workshop, you'll be able to attend the evening seminar for free!
April 16th, 6:30-8:30 - "From Portraits to Picture Book"
Join Sigma Pro photographer David FitzSimmons for a fun-filled presentation of beautiful and bizarre CURIOUS CRITTERS. Learn how David turned his mesmerizing animal portraits into four traveling exhibits, numerous magazine articles, and a children’s picture book series that has won nine national book awards and sold over 100,000 copies. After explaining the history of the project, David will talk about the techniques, challenges, and purposes for photographing creatures against white backgrounds. Hear stories of animal antics and see amazing images, including sealife from his just-released book, “CURIOUS CRITTERS: Marine.” Plus, hundreds of dollars in door prizes!
April 17th, 2pm-8pm - "How-to: Producing Your Own Animal Portraits"
Learn the secrets of producing high key animal portraits just like the award-winning Curious Critters photo series. Understand the techniques, challenges, and purposes for photographing creatures against white backgrounds, and participate in a Curious Critters animal photo session with LIVE animals. Everyone will get a chance to photograph critters such as turtles, frogs, salamanders, birds, or other Curious Critters, learning lighting, posing, and post-processing. Sigma will provide loaner lenses in popular mounts. Plus, many great door prizes!
Food will be provided during the April 17th workshop.
About David:

David FitzSimmons is an award-winning free-lance photographer and writer. David photographs and writes for various magazines, including Outdoor Photographer, Popular Photography, Professional Photographer, and Shutterbug. His 100+ calendar credits include numerous titles by BrownTrout, Barnes & Noble, and TF Publishing. David’s most recent publications include Animals of Ohio’s Ponds and Vernal Pools, Curious Critters, and Curious Critter Volume Two, which have won nine national book awards and sold over 100,000 copies, as well as audiobooks for both Curious Critters titles. Curious Critters Marine will be released April 2015 and will feature animals of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. Salamander Dance, a picture book exploring the annual life cycle of vernal pools, will be released Spring 2016.
One of seven Sigma Pro photographers in North America, David presents seminars and workshops to a wide variety of audiences, from public school, college, and university classes to photography groups and civic organizations. His works have been exhibited at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute, the National Center for Nature Photography, and the Telluride Photo Festival.
Before becoming a freelance photographer and author, David taught for over twenty years—first high school English and then as a university professor, having instructed at Cornell University, Ohio State, and Ashland University. He holds a Ph.D. in English from Ohio State University, with a specialty in narrative theory—investigating the components of storytelling—something that influences his photography and writing.
