DEMYSTIFY YOUR FLASH

FRI, APRIL 30 | 12-3PM

We will begin with the basics of TTL mode, then work our way to understanding manual mode settings. We’ll explore possibilities such as bouncing, blending flash with ambient light and diffusing with basic light modifiers. At the end of this workshop the use of flash will be demystified, and you'll know how great a flash can make your images look.

HIDDEN IN THE SHADOWS

FRI, APRIL 30 | 5-8PM

The poetry of an image often lies in the details we overlook. We aspire to properly expose our images and to craft good compositions with beautiful tones or color, but what about the shadows?

We will study and discuss the work of different photographers who have mastered the elegance of shadows. Before I introduce any of the photographers we’re going to study, I would like to see and hear your ideas and impressions of shadows - not just their presence in an image but also their meaning. In preparation for our workshop, I will ask each of you to send (via WeTransfer.com) 3-5 images that you feel explore shadow imagery and ideas. They can be your images or images that inspire you.

ADVANCED LIGHTROOM: PART II

SAT, MAY 1 | 10AM-1PM

This workshop will explore more advanced techniques for editing, printing and bookmaking in Adobe Lightroom Classic. We will review and expand our knowledge of the Develop Module tools and introduce the more selective tools such as the graduated and radial filters, the adjustment brush, and the HSL sliders. We will also go over setting up for printing and creating amazing photo books to show off your work.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Carol Dragon is a New York City based photographer who focuses on portraiture, dance and documentary projects. Since 2015, Dragon has been working on a long-term project documenting the community and culture of New York City street dancers. For this immersive work, Dragon was awarded 2017 and 2018 Creative Engagement grants by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council and a 2018 Citizens Committee of New York City Neighborhood Grant.

Dragon holds a BFA and MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, where she began her career as a painter. Since 1990, Dragon has worked solely with photography, but the influence of the painter’s eye still informs her practice.
Her work has been exhibited in multiple solo shows in New York City. Dragon recently staged an event, Beyond the Yellow Tape, which paired her portraits and videos of street dancers with live dance performances. In spring of 2019 her commissioned portraits for Families Belong Together were shown at SXSW in Austin, Texas. This exhibition was part of the ACLU 100 Years’ Experience and traveled to 15 other U.S. cities. In 2017 she had a solo exhibition, MADD PAIN, at Park Avenue Armory. Her images have been featured in multiple publications and her work was showcased in the Cynthia Dantzig book, 100 New York Photographers.

Besides working actively as a photographer, Dragon teaches at the International Center of Photography in New York and has done a number of workshops in Italy, Dubai and Maine. PDN magazine ranked her as one of the top photography instructors in the article: The Best Photo Workshops: A Reader Survey.
