How to Use Your Flash
with Tim Babiak

Learn intermediate techniques for using speedlight flash on-camera indoors. While many photographers avoid using on-camera flash, some situations like event photography call for it. Use of on-camera flash typically yields unflattering results. This two-hour class will cover key topics to get you using on-camera flash in an unconventional manner to get beautiful results. You’ll practice what you learn with other members of the class to ensure you’ve mastered this new technique.

Please register early, within 5 days of the start date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation.

Topics Covered

  • Understanding battery options and why they’re important
  • Typical approaches to using on-camera flash and their shortcomings
  • Understanding how TTL works
  • Evaluating ambient light
  • Blending flash with ambient light
  • Camera and flash settings
  • How to light large groups evenly
  • Creating directional portrait light

Audience

This class is targeted for all levels of photographers who have a speedlight flash with a rotating flash head who want to improve their indoor portrait and event photography.

Objective

This workshop provides a great, non-intuitive approach to using on-camera flash indoors. Students will work with one another to practice and master the technique they’ve learned. Students will leave the class with a new approach to using on-camera flash they can put to use immediately.

Schedule and Format

This two-hour class consists of lecture, demonstration and practice. Students will see the instructor demonstrate all camera settings and techniques then practice the technique with other students. The instructor will review student work and provide suggestions for improvement. Students need to bring their camera, lens and a speedlight flash with rotating flash head.
