The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD is a compact telephoto zoom lens for full-frame Nikon Z-mount mirrorless cameras, covering a broad telephoto range in what Tamron markets as the world's smallest and lightest lens of its class. At just 150.3mm long and 580g, it offers genuine telephoto reach without the bulk typically associated with lenses in the 70-300mm range, making it a practical choice for sports, wildlife, portraits, and general telephoto work where portability matters. On APS-C Nikon Z bodies the lens provides a 105-450mm equivalent focal length range for additional reach.
The optical formula consists of 15 elements in 10 groups, including one LD (Low Dispersion) element specifically arranged to suppress axial chromatic aberration, which tends to be pronounced in telephoto zoom designs. Tamron's BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating controls ghosting and flare, and the RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor delivers fast, precise, and notably quiet focusing performance that takes full advantage of in-camera features including Eye AF and Fast Hybrid AF on compatible bodies. The lens supports Tamron Lens Utility via USB-connection through the lens mount for firmware updates and customization, and a moisture-resistant construction adds a measure of reliability in varied outdoor conditions.
