Posing & Directing: Create Natural, Confident Portraits with Angi Lewis

Great portraits aren't just about having the right camera or lighting—they're about knowing how to direct the person in front of your lens. This hands-on workshop will help you move beyond stiff, overly posed images and learn how to confidently guide real people into flattering, natural-looking poses.

Whether you're photographing clients, families, couples, headshots, personal branding, or everyday people who aren't comfortable in front of a camera, you'll learn practical techniques for making your subjects look and feel their best. We'll focus on simple adjustments that can dramatically change posture, proportions, expression, and overall presence without making your subject feel like they're following a complicated set of instructions.

You'll learn how to quickly evaluate your subject, communicate clearly, and make adjustments in real time—all while keeping the session relaxed and engaging.

What You'll Learn

  • Pose real people—not professional models—with simple techniques that work across different ages, body types, and comfort levels.
  • Find flattering angles and positions that naturally slim, lengthen, and create better proportions without making the pose feel forced.
  • Solve the classic posing challenge: what do I do with my hands? Learn natural hand placement that gives your subject something purposeful to do.
  • Create natural posture and body language by making small adjustments to shoulders, hips, chin, feet, and overall body position.
  • Coach genuine expressions and move beyond stiff smiles to create relaxed, authentic moments.
  • Use verbal direction and mirroring to demonstrate poses and guide your subject without touching them or overwhelming them with complicated instructions.
  • Adapt your posing approach for men, women, couples, families, and groups.
  • Build rapport quickly so camera-shy subjects become more comfortable and confident in front of the camera.
  • Keep the session moving with a library of simple pose variations so you aren't constantly stopping to figure out what comes next.
  • Make small adjustments that make a big difference, learning how changes in camera angle, subject position, lens choice, and body placement affect the final image.
  • Direct with confidence so your clients trust your vision and you can spend less time saying "just do something natural."

By the end of the workshop, you'll have a practical system for approaching almost any subject and confidently creating flattering, authentic portraits. You'll leave with repeatable posing techniques, better direction, and the ability to turn even camera-shy clients into confident subjects.
