The camera you already own can become a powerful filmmaking tool—with the right accessories and a better understanding of how to use them.  In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to build out a practical cinema-style rig using your DSLR or mirrorless camera as the foundation. We’ll break down the most useful filmmaking accessories—from cages and handles to external monitors, microphones, follow-focus systems, matte boxes, and more—and explain what each one actually does  More importantly, you’ll learn which accessories are worth adding, which are optional, and which may simply add weight and complexity without improving your footage. The goal isn’t to build the biggest rig—it’s to build the right rig for you.

Meet Your Instructor: William F. Reed

William F. Reed is an Austin-based filmmaker, producer, and educator with more than a decade of experience in independent film production. He is the founder of Rude Boy Pictures and has taught filmmaking through the Austin Film Society, Austin School of Film, Lone Star Film Society, and other arts organizations.  William previously served as Head of the Cinematic Arts Department at the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts and was a co-conspirator of the Hill Country Film Festival. His filmmaking experience spans both digital and analog formats, including digital cinema, 16mm motion-picture production, 35mm still photography, and traditional darkroom processes.  His work includes the independently distributed feature film The Good Hearts Club and the forthcoming documentary Teenage Supernova, which received support from the Austin Film Society.  Known for making professional filmmaking concepts practical, approachable, and accessible, William was recently a featured speaker at Precision Camera’s Filmmaker and Content Creator Weekend, where his class on creating cinematic images with everyday cameras drew a full audience.  Now, he’s bringing that same practical approach to building out your camera—showing you how to get more from the gear you already own and create a filmmaking setup that works for you.
