Sony ECM-W5R Wireless Microphone Receiver
Designed primarily for Sony cameras featuring a compatible Multi Interface (MI) Shoe with a built-in digital audio interface, the Sony ECM-W5 Receiver connects directly to the camera for cable-free digital audio recording and camera-supplied power. Used with ECM-W5T microphone/transmitters (available separately), it supports high-resolution audio capture, four-channel in-camera recording, wireless headphone monitoring, and timecode synchronization. Supported Sony cameras can record 32-bit float audio directly into the video file, simplifying editing and file management. The versatile receiver can also be used with computers and mobile devices, as well as cameras without a Sony MI Shoe.
Digital Audio Integration with Select Sony Cameras
Through a compatible camera's MI Shoe, the receiver delivers digital audio at up to 96 kHz/24-bit or 48 kHz/32-bit float. On supported cameras, 32-bit float audio is recorded directly as an audio track within the video file, eliminating the need to manage and synchronize a separate audio recording. Quiet voices and sudden peaks can be adjusted in postproduction, reducing the need for ongoing gain adjustments during shooting. Compatible cameras also support simultaneous WAV recording to retain an audio source separately from the video file.
Input gain offers automatic adjustment to help prevent clipping and distortion, or manual control from -12 to +12 dB, even during 32-bit float recording. Noise-cut and low-cut functions can be switched on or off through the menu.
Four-Channel Recording and Stable Transmission
The receiver supports up to four in-camera audio channels with ECM-W5T microphone/transmitters. Recording speakers on separate tracks makes it easier to edit interviews and conversations.
The system's low-latency wireless transmission operates at distances up to approximately 1640' in line-of-sight conditions. Bluetooth hopping technology and an optimized wireless design help maintain stable connections and minimize dropouts, even in crowded radio environments.
Wireless Monitoring and External Microphone Input
Connect compatible Sony Bluetooth LE Audio headphones for cable-free audio monitoring during shooting. The receiver can also capture audio from the microphone on compatible Sony wireless headphones and record it in-camera. With a compatible microphone, binaural recording supports ambient sound capture with a sense of spatial depth.
A mono 3.5mm external microphone input accepts lavaliers such as the Sony ECM-L1, available separately.
Timecode Synchronization and Flexible Connectivity
Timecode output helps align footage quickly and accurately in postproduction. In USB SYNC mode, a USB-C cable connects the receiver to a compatible Sony camera to synchronize with timecode stored as video metadata, supporting multi-camera workflows.
The receiver also supports recording to compatible smartphones and PCs. Connection to devices supporting USB Audio Class 2.0 enables USB audio recording, including 32-bit float.
Touchscreen Controls and Camera-Supplied Power
A high-contrast AMOLED touchscreen provides access to menu settings, complemented by a control wheel/button. LEDs indicate power, recording, and link status.
A compatible camera powers the receiver through the MI Shoe for extended shooting. When configured in advance, camera-linked power also switches on the receiver and paired microphones. For standalone operation, the receiver provides up to seven hours of continuous use on a full charge.
