First Impressions of the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM

First Impressions of the Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM

Last weekend I packed my bags and headed west to Marfa - a small town with big heart, especially for the art community. Yeah, Field Trip took over El Cosmico and effectively the whole town, with the amazing artists, brands, and visionaries sharing their passion with a collection of 600 individuals looking for personal growth.

Our good friends at Sony were the main sponsors, and our tech rep Jimmy just happen to have the brand new 135mm f/1.8 G Master lens. What better opportunity to test it out making beautiful portraits under the big, bright west Texas sky?

Photographer and creative Hailley Howard led a workshop titled Bare Basics, which allowed us to explore human form in the beautiful desert, and take a close look at the intimate connection and communication that occurs between photographer and nude subject. Our fearless model Jax was receptive and amazing in front of 30+ photographers taking her photo at the same time.

The 135mm was excellent for this. It allowed the perfect subject isolation without being too close. Straight out of camera, the color quality was natural and dreamy. And saying this lens is sharp is an understatement - its tack sharp, even wide open at f/1.8.
