Portraits with the brand new
Sigma 56mm f1.4
Two weeks ago, a special package arrived.
The Sigma 56mm f/1.4!
This little lens - no seriously, it's tiny - is turning heads in the mirrorless world. The Sigma "Contemporary" line of lenses may sit below the "Art" series, but they still deliver insanely high-quality results, sometimes for a lesser price than Art lenses in the same range, and are often designed for APS-C and smaller sensors.
This lens fits beautifully into the trio of fast glass Sigma has created for non-full frame mirrorless - the 16mm f/1.4, the 30mm f/1.4 and 56mm f/1.4. Between the three of those lenses, what else do you need?
56mm f/1.6 Features:
- Aperture Range: f/1.4 to f/16
- One SLD Element, Two Aspherical Elements
- Super Multi-Layer Coating
- Stepping Motor AF System
- Weather-Sealed Construction
- Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
We adventured with Brooke of Austin make-up duo Blush N Bangs around South Congress Avenue to test the lens out. All images made on a Sony A6500.

If shooting on a Sony E-mount camera, like we did with these photos, the focal equivalency in 35mm terms is approximately 84mm. If you are a micro four thirds photographer, this lens will equate to a 112mm lens. Both are fantastic portrait lengths. Paired with a wide-open aperture at f/1.4 that is reliably sharp, this lens delivers results that mimic that of full-frame depth-of-field quality.
